Yo.

Recently I've been collecting music CDs, one part of it is because I wanna own my favourite albums, but solely as a way to check out new bands. So rather than just pick up albums I've already listened to, I skim through the sections and check out whatever album is available for an artist I've heard about. Im basically describing buying an item from a store as if it's a revolutionary thing.

Point is, I wanna share music. I wanna hear what you've been listening to, it can be the most recent thing or an all-time favourite album, what tracks from said album are your favourites? What's your story with the artist? It's fine if you only have a favourite song instead of a whole album, you don't have to give out a whole paragraph if you don't feel like it.

I'll make the occasional post on albums I finished recently, alongside ones I've been listening to for a while, depends on my mood. We can keep each other update on our recent listens if you feel like doing the same, this is not just about my music.

These are the most notable of what I've been listening to recently: Jacob Collier's Djesse Vol. 4 and the soundtrack from season two of Arcane.

The former has probably taken my top spot for favorite album ever since it released on Leap Day last year - there's definitely an acquired taste, both to the track list and to a sizable portion of Jacob's music altogether, but I've been preaching this guy for years at this point. This was up for Album of the Year too (even though it had no realistic chance against the mainstream names). I personally recommend (for those who are unfamiliar with his work):
  • Little Blue (serene, folky piece, probably the best on the album.
  • Witness Me (expressing my joy for the gospel sound)
  • Bridge Over Troubled Water (an a cappella cover of the Simon & Garfunkel song, which just won a Grammy last weekend)
  • Over You (very electronic, a bit kpop-y too)
I think Arcane is my favorite show right now, after it finished earlier in November. I'll get into the show itself elsewhere, but the soundtrack (for both seasons) is so worth highlighting since it's curated to the show. I feel like my favorite songs from season one I like just a bit more than my favorites from season two, but the latter might be the better set altogether. My favorites:
  • I Can't Hear It Now
  • Hellfire
  • Spin the Wheel
  • Ma Meilleure Ennemie
  • Fantastic

Jacob Collier's been a huge influence for me too, I'm sure many of you already know that though and Chris did a great job summarizing his latest work so I'll shine a spotlight on a few of my other favorites.

I've gone very much down the rabbit hole of jazz-funk-electronic fusion, and I really love the work of the duo Knower. Their whole album Time Traveler is amazing, and I'd say my favorite song from that is "Do Hot Girls Like Chords." Louis Cole, half of Knower, is also part of a duo called Clown Core (allegedly; his identity as the drummer has never been officially confirmed) which is a bit more well known for its absurdity. "Toilet" and "Hell" are a few good ones. Also, Louis's solo album called Quality Over Opinion has been insanely influential to me for the last year. A few I would recommend are:
"Park Your Car On My Face" full fledged irresistible P H O N K.
"Let It Happen" absolutely gorgeous power ballad
"Quality Over Opinion/Dead Inside Shuffle" one of the most brain melting and well sequenced openings to an album ever

Aside from these guys, I also really love Anomalie. I first discovered him as background music for an old PQ compilation by RadiantVibe. His cover of "Come Running To Me" is amazing, as is "Metropole," "Dribble," "Bond," and pretty much anything from his Metropole I and II albums.

A friend recommended some Ryuichi Sakamato to me the other day - specifically, the song "Thousand Knives" - and it tickled my senses SO HARD I'm gonna listen more.

Lastly, as someone who plays cello, I'm sure you all know I love orchestra music. Right now the uni orchestra I play in working on an orchestral suite from Sergei Prokofiev's ballet Romeo and Juliet. The tragic ending movements are insanely powerful, and if you wanna hear some ridiculous shredding from the entire violin section listen to The Death of Tybalt. Prokofiev, Dmitri Shostakovich (symphony no. 8 is a chilling musical depiction of WWII), and Maurice Ravel are some of my favorite orchestral composers to play.

Here's some a lot of context for this response.

Over the past couple of years I've seen my own music taste take a pretty big turn. A few years ago I only really listened to whatever was playing on the radio, save for some video game soundtracks, I have also started buying CDs now, because I like owning my favourite albums physically - when I went to Das KulturKaufhaus in Berlin I bought 3 in person. Here's one track from every CD I own

Warning: Spoiler!

And here's some from albums I don't own but want to own

Yesss physical media is underrated! I used to have a mini CD player that had an audio out jack, but I don't know what happened to it. There are also two stereos in my house, but I think one of them is from the early 1990s and doesn't work anymore, while the other works but is never plugged in and is also in a very inconvenient location. So I would collect more CDs if I had an easier way to play them. I do have an iPod Classic, but it's so old and the hard drive is finally starting to die. I wish there was a way to fix it.

You ever looked into Elite Obsolete Electronics? They're a good place for iPod repairs. I keep that shit on my bookmarks to contimplate on buying a custom iPod.

I actually got a stereo with a CD player for Christmas this year because my old CD player kicked the bucket (it was about 20 years old at that point anyway), but when I opened it, it was broken out of the box... we sent it back to the shops ages ago and I'm supposed to be getting it back either tomorrow or over the next week.

Yo, it's been a while.
I got some stuff in my drafts, but I thought it would be fitting to come back with a post about what I've been listening to.

Everything Is

Yo, click the album art to listen to it on Youtube.

This is another album I listened to because of a singular song: "Shot Down"
Again, found this one through the Burnout series. "Shot Down" did appear in Revenge too, same place where I was found CKY, but funny enough, my first exposure to it was through the PSP game "Burnout Legends."
In fact, it's the very first song you hear when you open the game. The intro itself is in your face, it shows you exactly what you'll expect and doesn't need to elaborate any further. Though it barely stands a candle to Burnout 3's intro:
Warning: Spoiler!

It was at this point where I was captivated by this song when I was a kid. Though for some reasons, it never stuck on me. The only song I remembered from that game was "Shotgun" by The Outline, another song that also appears in Revenge.

Cut to last year, I wanted to keep myself at bay with my studies, so I thought it would be convenient if I condition myself into having my laptop be where I work, and anything outside is free-time. This led me to buy a PSP and potentially re-experience some games from my childhood, alongside some new shit I missed out on.

Now don't tell Sony this, but I don't think I've ever seen a UMD disc in my possession, not back then or ever. All my games were borrowed from some dude named Travis O' Rent, which I think is an alias, so good luck finding the guy.

But aside from that, Travis was nice enough to give me a copy of Burnout Legends, and the minute the intro played, the song instantly stuck on me like a symbiote.
Let's skip to the part where I talk about the album, this isn't a Burnout Legends review.

I really enjoyed the first half of this album, there were a few good songs in the closing half, but none of them stood a candle against the opening acts. It sucks because right after "Just Friends", the next song, "Everything Is," (Which might be excluded from the track list or placed in a different order) has a really cool beginning, but it couldn't carry that energy for the rest of the song.

"Intermission" I felt was an unnecessary song, I think "Behind Your Eyes" did a better job at being the lenient song between the album, even then I thought it was also a weak song. There didn't need to be two lenient songs in such a short album, especially if the second one is placed right before the last song in the album.

This is a unique situation, because this album was their debut. If this is the quality I got from listening to their first album, then maybe their discography could be promising. I don't have this album physically, but I'll try my luck online, I doubt this shit is sought-after and goes for morbillion dollars used and pissed on.

In my standing right now, I'm making this up because I can, "Everything Is" by Nine Black Alps will be placed right below "An Answer Can Be Found" by CKY.

Here are a few of my favourites:

I just got a free boom box from next door. It has a CD player, tape deck, radio, and Bluetooth—apparently it's only a few years old. So I've been using that to play CDs, although the speaker quality is nowhere near as good as on my laptop.

Recently I've been learning Mozart's Piano Sonata #6 in D, K 284 on piano, so I guess that's what I've been listening to.
