hPerks created the topic: 2018 Summer Multiplayer Tournament
2018 Summer Multiplayer Tournament

It's that time of year again! Players of all levels of skill and experience are invited to participate in our ritual summer of excitement, blue steals, mega marbles, spawn camps, lag spikes, walls of commentary, and non-stop HYPE that is the Summer Multiplayer Tournament. This is our 5th annual gem hunt tournament, and after the 3rd and 4th ones went so uncharacteristically smoothly, we figured it might be time for new leadership to bring the tourneys back to their roots.

Check this sheet for the current status of the tournament!
Player information, match results, standings, rankings, ratings, and more - all updated live!

tinyurl.com/mbhunt2018

Now that we have Festival of Champions giving out gift cards, our humble summer tourneys are getting some competition. So, along with the usual flairs and prefixes, this year we're offering the following...

Cash Prizes
Can be received as a gift card to either Steam or Amazon.

Winner: $40 USD
Runner-Up: $25 USD
Semifinalists: $15 USD each

Performance Ratings
To help with certain aspects of the tournament, I've taken data from all previous competitive gem hunt events and calculated for each participant an Elo rating, measuring how well they have performed in these events. These ratings are on the spreadsheet, and will be updated as results come in.

Because of this, we have - for the first time ever - two new awards/prizes for this tournament!

Most Improved Player: $25 USD
Given to the player with the highest increase in performance rating points from this tournament. Look for your name on the Summary page of the spreadsheet; if your rating looks too low - maybe you've underperformed in previous events, or just improved a lot since then - then keep your eyes on this prize!

Best Newcomer: $25 USD
Given to the player with the highest performance rating after the tournament who has not participated in any previous competitive gem hunt events. This includes all previous tournaments, the short-lived Gem Hunt League, and the 2017 Festival of Champions. (It does not include the "mini-tourneys", which involved other multiplayer game modes and must never be mentioned again.)

Swiss Rounds (June 18th to August 12th)
This is your chance to rack up as many wins as you can, to improve your standing in the playoffs.

Format

  • Each player will play 8 matches, one per week.
  • The matchups for all 8 weeks are on the spreadsheet. Each match will need to be scheduled by the players themselves, at a time that works for both of them.
  • Each match will require at least one spectator, to post the results of the match in this thread - including the individual game scores (i.e. how many gems each player got). This is needed for tiebreaks.

Matches

  • Each match consists of 5 games.
  • Your final tally at the end of the 8 weeks is the number of games you win, out of a possible 40, rather than the number of matches. So if a lower-ranked player can pick off one or two games from a top player, that'll come in handy for them.
  • If two players have the same number of wins at the end of 8 weeks, ties are broken based on points differential.

Maps

  • In each match, the lower-seeded player (in the sense that 16 is lower-seeded than 1) picks the first map, and then the players alternate map picks until the final (5th) map, which will be chosen by the randomizer.
  • In these matches, you can't pick a map that you've already picked in this tournament. Plan ahead, and use your best maps wisely!

Seedings

  • The seedings for the swiss rounds are decided by past performance rating. New players are considered to have a performance rating of 1500 (the default starting point for everyone), situating them in the middle of the pack. Ties in ratings are broken alphabetically.
  • The 8-week schedules are configured so that everyone has an equally-skilled set of 8 opponents, based on these seed numbers. There's no advantage to having a higher or lower seed here.

Playoffs (August 13th to September 16th)
Winner is the last one standing - lose a match, and you're eliminated!

Format

  • The playoffs will be a standard single elimination bracket, with each player playing one match per week until they're eliminated.
  • Further information will be available on Challonge, once the swiss rounds are finished.
  • Again, each match will require a spectator to report the results.
  • Again, let me know if you will be unavailable at any time during this period. Because this is an elimination format rather than swiss, it might be harder to make accommodations.

Matches

  • Each match will be first-to-4-wins, with the exception of the finals, which will be first-to-5-wins.
  • Unlike the swiss rounds, these matches are winner-take-all.

Maps

  • In each match, the lower-seeded player (in the sense that 16 is lower-seeded than 1) picks the first map, and then the players alternate map picks until the match is over.
  • In these matches, you can't pick a map that you've already picked in the playoffs. However, you can pick one that you've already picked in the swiss rounds. Extra strategy is needed here; players will have to decide if they want to save their best maps for later and risk getting eliminated, or play it safe and have a disadvantage later on.

Seedings

  • Players will be ranked in the single elimination bracket based on the number of games they won in the swiss rounds, with tiebreaks if necessary.
  • Your performance in the swiss rounds will determine how easy your path to victory is. The more games you win there, the easier your opponents will be here.

Issues

  • If two players are not able to agree on a time to play their match, or if one or both players fail to show up, report the problem to me and I'll decide how to handle it. Typically, this is a one-sided dispute with one player simply failing to show up, which will result in a 5-0 victory (or 4-0 in a playoff match) with a +500 recorded points differential for the other player.
  • A game in progress can be restarted if and only if both players agree to do so. This typically happens if a player has a significant lag spike or crash; it's common and sportsmanlike for the other person to acknowledge this and give them the redo, however they do have the final call.

I'll be out of town w/o my laptop on June 17th, but I'll have my laptop back by the 24th, so I may need to do two Swiss matches during that second week. Might be out of town at some point in August as well, I'll have my laptop but I may have to figure out how to cope with ping issues during that time.

Will be out of town without a computer for a month from mid-late July to mid-late August. Will discuss later.

PLEASE set it up so Eguy and I play when he’s in Seattle. That would be so epic.

First player ever to get all of the Awesome Times.
