Hey everyone,

A few announcements that are worthwhile:

- The Platinum Team is proud to announce that Amd42 (Derpking) will officially be part of The Platinum Team with contributions to PlatinumQuest as another programmer. We look forward to working with him on PlatinumQuest!

- In case you haven't seen it yet, we have added shaders to Marble Blast Platinum for a future update in preparation for PlatinumQuest! A common question we have received is if the shaders are optional. The shaders will be optional, and will require a graphics card with OpenGL 2.1 or higher (Gforce 6000 series, Radeon 2000 series, Intel HD Graphics) or better with a minimum of 256MB of dedicated video ram. They will work on Windows XP+ and Mac OS 10.6+. Direct3D (Part of DirectX) is not supported in marble blast platinum or PlatinumQuest, so there will be no Direct3D shaders.

- If your card is too old, or you decide not to use the shaders, you can use the original Marble Blast rendering engine. However, we strongly recommend to make use of the shaders, because there is Graphics Hardware Caching enabled for the geometry which makes the rendering actually faster than the fixed function pipeline. We will most likely provide quality options for the shaders, so that even lower-power cards can still take advantage of the caching.

What kind of shaders? Are they cel/toon shaders (i.e. black outlines like in the hand-drawn cartoons)? Or do they just add a white shine-mark on the models?

From what I've seen, they basically make MBG levels look like the old Xbox version, which you can see here:


Presumably, they'll use MBU-like shaders for the MBU levels and something in between for MBP.

Does this mean my opengl 2.0 card will not work?

Your OpenGL 2.0 card won't work for the shaders, but (correct me if I'm wrong, Platinum Team) the game itself will still run fine, don't worry! You just don't get to see the cool effects.

Also, I should mention that the best examples of the shader effects are to be seen on the MB Twitter account. They're using a slightly less drastic approach than MBXbox did.

That is correct, whilrigig. If your card does not support 2.1 you just can't get the cool effects. But you will still be able to play as long as you have OpenGL 1.2 or higher support accelerated :)

The new Shaders look very nice, looking forward to play with them, as for PlatinumQuest, I'm looking forward to have another spotlight!
