My username change. was created by Mike
I'm having a really hard time to decide what I should use for my username.
I want one that actively describes who I am as a person and how I feel. I'm really bad at making decisions, so I thought I could make a poll to help me choose which ones people like the best.

Please feel free to vote here:

(Note: I used two because strawpoll uses a limit of 30-possibliites. Yes, there's that many.)

Okay, so these all seem to be Russian words. Here are Google's translations of them.

"hell. anger. renouncement. fear. yearning. anger. annoyance. joy. discord. rage. clogged. envy. Nichev. jealousy. awful. hatred. frightened. vindictive. flow. eternity. rabies. worst. unattainable. fear. is lost. doubt. suffering. anxiety. put. error. why. anxiety. insects. hopelessness. useless. the endless. distraught. loneliness. disturbance. short temper. sarcasm. unsolvable. perseverance. black hole. negativity. disappointment. ill will."

The more meaning you put into a username, the more people will tend to involuntarily make associations, and their first impression of you will be affected by it. The accessibility of a username also matters - if a username is hard to spell, pronounce, and/or remember, people will be less comfortable saying it, and by extension, talking about you and with you. This is all stuff you generally don't want.

I would strongly recommend against 95% of these usernames for those two reasons. In particular, I would especially urge you not to name yourself after a thing, concept or emotion that has a very strong universal negative connotation. I don't see a purpose for this, especially since emotions are very temporary. In a year or two, (hopefully) the list of emotions that describe how you feel may be completely different.

Some people choose to include things in their usernames like their hobbies, or even their political affiliations. These are likewise often temporary things, and things that carry connotations, positive and negative, which will be associated with them when they meet other people. But hobbies and political affiliations don't have negative connotations for everyone. Naming yourself "hell" or "anger" is almost a caricature of the above kind of emotionally-charged names.

I'm concerned, of course, that these are the words you think of when describing yourself. I'm sorry that your life has brought you to that point, and I honestly do know what it's like to see nothing but negatives in your life (believe it or not, I once had serious self-esteem issues). But if you want to break out of that pattern in general, it might be interesting to see if you can do it within the context of just picking a username. See if you can find other things in your life that inspire you in that way - maybe moving away from abstract concepts into the concrete positive things in your life that you're passionate about, or that bring you enjoyment, however small. If you can embrace this positivity in this small area, you might be able to expand that mindset into other parts of your life - and a username that reminds you of positive things might even help in that process.

As for the current poll, my vote is for Radost ("joy"), for obvious reasons. It's a bit clunky-sounding for me but better than most in that regard as well. (Toska, which would be my favourite ordinarily, apparently has some dark connotations behind its purported meaning of "yearning".)

But I do like "MikeSan" more than anything else. It's unique, accessible, and just plain fun.
