Got this error message when tried to convert my new level into a .dif:
Light map too large 26 x 280 (where max is 256x256). Your have a brush that is too large, or your light map scale value may be too small

I tried to make my brushes shorter, but it didn't help much (some of them were extremely tall).

Entire .map itself is 170x170x140 (approximately x = [-90, 90] and y= [-90,90], z=[75, -60]). I don't think it is too large.

I get this error sometimes for the weirdest reasons. Usually I solve this problem by taking whichever brush (or brushes) would be causing this error and using either the knife or slice tool to split the selected brushes into two mr even three parts.

This issue has been around for too many years...

Once M2D decides your map has a brush that is too big, even if it wasn't to start with, there isn't much you can do. That .map is "dead".
The fix is opening that map in quark/constructor, and press Save As and give the map a new name, For example: mylevel.map becomes newlevel.map .
You can now delete the original map file, mylevel.map, as the new one you produced will not have this issue.

It would be helpful to anyone who finds this post later if you could give a brief summary of how you fixed this. Thanks!

(cmiiw) Idk about other .map editing software though, but this is for Constructor. Open up the .map file with notepad or something (not ms word), and look for the first lines and search for light_geometry_scale
Code:
// This map has been written by the Torque Constructor // For more information see http://www.garagegames.com { "classname" "worldspawn" "detail_number" "0" "min_pixels" "250" "geometry_scale" "32" "light_geometry_scale" "32" "ambient_color" "0 0 0" "emergency_ambient_color" "0 0 0" "mapversion" "220"

The problem most likely occurred because you have the value of light_geometry_scale too low, which for me it is always 8. Change it from 8 to 32 and likely the problem will be solved and you can convert it. This method always works for me for maps which is really big and have tall brushes.
