- Download THOUSANDS of Custom Levels, Artwork, Interiors, Codes, and even Marble Blast Mods with our new Downloads Archive! The website will feature a Downloads section, including all submissions to the Marble Blast Development Kit. You will no longer have to dig through hundreds of threads, or years of broken links and download urls to find your Custom Level Packs. Everything will be stored on the website's host, and available 24/7.

- Upload your content DIRECTLY to the site! Upload custom levels, artwork, or tid-bits of code using our content submission system. This system is monitored by the website administrators and moderators, and must be approved by the staff before your content goes live, to ensure the files are safe, and usable. If your upload is published, it will be displayed publicly in the downloads section, with an author link directly to your website account!

- Rate content uploads! You can now provide simple 1-5 star ratings of custom levels, artwork, or code directly on the download page for that item! An extensive review option is also available, allowing users to post the traditional review format from our Level of the Month contests.

I was thinking something like this would be great. You guys have though everything...

How about adding download functionality directly into the game?

@Pro Marbler, the engine prohibits anything that is non printable characters from being downloaded. That means text files can be downloaded, but not pictures, compiled .dso files, ect.

So you could download the mission file, but not interiors and the level picture? So any download client, if so existed, would have to be launched outside the game, like before the game starts? Would that be possible? Or would it be too troublesome to implement? It would seem like a major task to do, for one would probably have to make a separate client by scratch.

I haven't visited this forum in years… Too bad to see that you guys are leaving ProBoards, but I understand how the lack of integration is a problem.

Well aside from the freedom that lets the staff control all aspects of the site instead of relying on proboards, what else do you need?

There isn't any software, per se. It runs on an engine built in PhP and JQuery, which allows us to fully customize and control -every- aspect of the website. On top of that, the freedom of a fully customizable web interface allows us to easily write leaderboard integration directly into site, among other things, and set up a single-sign on authentication server for any participating mod.

Did I mention we get total and full control of everything on our own hosted domain rather than being denied by Proboards any access to any forum information? It's the one thing I've really dreaded about this type of forum - entirely free, but you have no rights to any forum information, including user databases, thread databases, hosted files, etc. Essentially, we get no back-end interaction with the raw data, ever. The new site will give us that control when we need it (if, we need it.)

Things written in PHP and jQuery are software And as long as you have a stable host, you should be fine.

Personally, I like ProBoards, and as someone who has spent years writing and reading code to run many different forum systems, ProBoards has far surpassed anything else I have seen.

Good luck with the new site!

I'm certainly not opposed to a new forum system, but I think you're right about the merits of ProBoards. I don't have the kind of experience you do, but simply from being a part of the MBF for so long, I've not really encountered many other forums that are inherently better than what we have here.
Basically, for the new site, a simple claim of but it's better! isn't much of an argument.

However, what Aayrl said about finally being able to actually work with and OWN the backend is quite a strong argument. Also, the other new features will be very cool too.

I just wanted to point out that ProBoards has given us a great platform. It's been neat to see how these forums have changed and improved functionally and aesthetically over the years. Hat tip to the staff for that.

For this forum, I can certainly see why a self-hosted system would be better, since you have need for single-signon across multiple parts of the site, need to include lots of downloads/file databases, and the like.
