It sounded a whole lot more like IDM (which is totally good too), especially around 2:30 and 4:15. Those segments were amazing! The glitching was very nicely done - the breaks were nearly perfect, and while it could have used more variation in the drums (the more distorted samples the better) the general vibe of the segment was excellent... but it still wasn't dubstep. The only part of the song that remotely sounded anything like dubstep and not IDM was the segment starting at 4:43. If the entire song sounded something like that, then I'd consider calling it dubstep and not IDM.
Most importantly though, the BPM was WAY too high for a dubstep song. Dubstep always has a BPM of 140, although I have heard a bit of experimental jungle/dubstep which was around 155 BPM which sounded great.
It also sounded like all of the samples aside from a few synths were very low quality, especially the drums. If you're looking for a good drum sample/loop, I'd suggest looking up the Amen break. It's a fairly short drum sample which the genre of Jungle (which evolved into DnB) is completely revolved around. The amen break has been distorted, altered, malformed and utterly refined more times then anyone could hope to count. In more then half of the songs I've listened to (which is quite a bit, trust me) I've heard the amen break countless times. There's a few of my favorite songs which have some very notable segments which include the amen break. Allow me to put up a few links:
- 1:18
- entire song
- 0:24
You can also find the Amen break being used in pretty much any IDM/jungle song.
Really though, Electrolyte is a very good song overall (excluding the low quality samples, most notably the piano intro) and I'm definitely going to give it a second listen.
As for your next upcoming song, Conduit Matrix, I'd really suggest lowering the BPM to 140, and try a whole lot heavier bass. Electrolyte didn't really have a heavy feel to it at all, and if you're modeling this new song after it, I'd suggest... well, not doing that.
If you need any examples of good bass or anything to that extent, feel free to send me a PM or something. I'm always open for a chat about music if that's your sort of thing.
Best of luck with the new song!
This changes a bit of the way I see music logically...
I love you, but your attitude is like that of a shrew. Your options? Take a pill or be my kill. Might I suggest that you wear a vest. Perish in class or be banished to the land of bluegrass, where dreams don't exist as you'll be eternally pissed.
