That's right people, our favorite chat communication program will be out of service in by the end of March April 8th, 2013. Instead, Microsoft is urging its users to download Skype 6.0 for Windows/Mac and by using a certain tool you can import all your MSN contacts right into Skype.

Sources:
blogs.skype.com/en/2012/11/skypewlm.html
www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-20222998

And additionally:

Quote:Users can now log into Skype with their Live Messenger ID and, if they choose, merge the account with an existing Skype account.

tbh I'll be using steam/skype exclusively, dunno about you guys. Nonetheless, this is pretty big.

Wow, that's...surprising. Does anybody know if Mac Messenger and/or Adium will be affected by this? If so, I guess I'll have to get used to Skype.

Well that's a shame from Microsoft. First they change view of OS and now their removing messenger witch was good because it didn't revealed much personal info or was good for accounts using nicknames.Thing that Skype lacks and MSN has is customization (for example emotions).
On the other hand considering it has lack of popularity i understand reasons why they wanted to do so and blend msn with skype.
I think the reason why people moved away from MSN was partially their new 2011 design witch was a fail.

Some guy that does DTS shapes and levels.

I never did use MSN, so it doesn't affect me much. I highly recommend Skype however. In addition to video chat, Skype offers free voice chat and IM. I use it all the time.

MSN had these things also, it just wasn't as popular. But besides the memories, I don't think I'll miss much of MSN.

I advise people: Skype isn't very secure. It isn't hard to get someone's IP from skype.

Skype also uses a megaton of bandwith whenever you do conference calls or video chats. Hell, even idle Skype will use anywhere between 60,000 and 120,000K of your memory. Still waiting for ICQ to make a comeback

Steam is 250MB idle. Didn't see it go up/down from there at any point.

I use these cool devices called cell phones to talk to people long-distance.

Video calls? I have to physically sit next to the people I work with, not sure how video conference calls are useful unless you're the CEO or chatting with management.

Why are we being forced to install useless, memory consuming software?

You can't log in to Skype using an MSN account, you need a Skype account to begin with...
Anyway, so sorry to hear, but I will be watching out for friend requests on both Skype (username- ninjastack) and Steam (username- randomguy1424).

UPDATE!
Microsoft had sent out that they're going to remove its Messenger services on 8th April instead of the original schedule.

*For me* they will not remove msn, just because is one of the most used social chat systems.

A bit more lookup today:

Quote:The upgrade will start with migrating English users conclude with migrating users on Brazilian Portuguese client on 30 April or later, with the exception of mainland China

Some people may be forced out starting today, some could still take a while.

Microsoft is in the process of merging all of their existing Windows Live users into Skype users. They claim the process could take several weeks, so I wouldn't be surprised if some of our users will be able to use MSN for the next few months until everything has been successfully pushed into Skype.

Well. Skype is for video communication... I don't see why Microsoft would replace messaging with video communication.

From what I recall, Microsoft landed some merging deal with Skype since their video conferencing services were far superior to the stuff Microsoft was developing for Windows Live. Skype has become the 'free' web conference standard, and Microsoft decided to simply include Skype's software with copies of Windows 8, namely their new line of their snazzy tablets, rather than wasting resources developing an inferior one, in an attempt to appeal to the mobile users and tap into the 'mobile/tablet' market.
